18th Century English Elm and Ash Bacon Settle Cabinet with Attached Bench

18th Century English Elm and Ash Bacon Settle Cabinet with Attached Bench. Made of highly figured elm and ash of a remarkable color and rich patination. Paneled door to the rear above a lift up seat over further panels. These large settles would have been situated close to the fireplace. In order to benefit from the warmth of the fire, the back is made as a cupboard space, and such compartments are traditionally associated with the hanging of bacon when curing it. Made in the West Country, circa 1780.
