Welcome to Hastening Antiques

Hastening Antiques, Ltd. is a direct importer of 18th and 19th century French provincial, Italian, and English furniture, and art objects.  Located in the 250 year old village of Middleburg, Virginia, an hour west of Washington DC, in a neighborhood of grand equestrian estates, hunt fields, and celebrated vineyards, we maintain spacious showrooms and interior design studios.

Owner and principal designer, Louis Shields, began collecting and selling French antiques to the English and U.S. markets from his shop in the Cotswalds in 1971.  Ten years latter, in 1981 he moved his showrooms  to Middleburg.  There are extensive restoration workshops at his nearby 18th century farm.

An 18th  century  commode is more than just a piece of furniture to fill a room.  It is like a great book: it has a history: a story you can “read” in it’s patina, in its fittings, in the wood chosen and how it was sawn.  I rarely forget an antique that has been in my hands because in touching the wood, re-glueing legs, and polishing a piece, I always wonder about the people who used it and enjoyed it a few hundred years ago.  How many “cassoulets” were served on a c. 1820 farm table from Southwest France?  I remember a particular applewood buffet with the most wonderful patina.  I sold it to clients who used it for years when they changed houses I sold it for them.  Several years later, at an auction, I recognized the piece and bought it again.  I sold it immediately.  I know exactly where it is today, and it is even more beautiful after several years of use and care.
